  • 1974 Goode, p. 221:
    [...] The statue was presented to the United States by the wife of the sculptor, to commemorate the ties which bind this nation with England. Originally it was intended to be a gift from the American Bar Association to the English Bar Association. It was decided, however, that the other piece, which is 9 feet tall and 4 feet wide, was too large to stand with the other statues in the Hall of Courts in London. As a result, Bartlett designed a smaller replica for the English Bar Association.
