- Text from Indianapolis Museum of Art (July 17, 2019):
The official medal commemorating Indiana’s centennial in 1916 presents an allegorical image of the Union as a draped Goddess of Liberty welcoming the new state, depicted as a young child. In the background are the original statehouse in Corydon and the tree known as the Constitutional Elm.
Indiana native and distinguished sculptor Janet Scudder was commissioned to create the medal, which she rendered with an elegant treatment of the figures and surrounding laurel wreath.
The reverse of the medal is based on the state seal, with a buffalo, a woodsman, and light radiating from a rising sun.
