This is a variant reduction of a monumental lion commissioned from Barye in 1836 by the government of the French king Louis-Philippe. It and an unauthorized cast were later placed as a pair at the Porte des Lions (Lions Gate) on the Seine side of the Louvre Palace’s Pavillon de Flore. Reproductions of them remain today—a testament to the enduring image of the lion as a symbol of royalty.
