Archipenko began the Torso in Space theme when he moved to Los Angeles in 1935. He continued the series through 1959, using a variety of media, including aluminium, chrome plate, and metalized terracotta, as well as drawings and lithographs. This bronze version was cast from the original plaster made in 1936 which the artist sprayed with bronze paint. Shortly after the plaster entered the collection of the Whitney Museum, Archipenko borrowed the sculpture and had the edition of six bronze casts made (correspondence, Klaus G. Perls, February 16, 1981).
