Fine bronze statuette of a young nude girl executed in the Beaux-Arts style. She is posed with her left hand held high and her fingers pinched as though she were meant to hold something. Her hair is short and tied back with a ribbon. She stands on a round molded base. Bronze has an artificial green patina. Signed Janet Scudder and stamped "Roman Bronze Works, New York." French sculptor, Janet Scudder, won many medals and awards in this country and her architecture and decorative sculpture is well represented in the U.S. She won a medal a the St. Louis Exhibition in 1904 and at the Columbian Exposition in 1875 and has works in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and at the Musee de Luxembourg in Paris.
Subject Description: Janet Scudder practiced sculpture throughout the Midwest, New York and France. She received commissions for garden sculpture from Clevelander, John D. Rockefeller.
