• Museum's information, April 2013:
  The motif of the rider and fallen horse is derived from Barye's "Lion Hunt" in the duke of Orléans' table centerpiece. The boar, which has replaced the lion in the earlier work, is likewise borrowed from a model for the sculpture "Wounded Boar, No. 1," which was first issued about 1874.
