Torso related to a reclining female figure in the lower right corner of the tympanum of the Gates of Hell, a figure which provided the model for Rodin's life-size marble figure of Ariadne in the Musée Rodin, Paris, which was apparently made about 1890 and subsequently reworked as a tomb figure. Tomb figure finished in 1908. Because of its size, fragmentary nature, and greater similarity to the figure on the Gates of Hell, the Metropolitan terracotta would seem to be an original study for that figure rather than for the Ariadne.
