Museum's information, April 2013:
This piece is a contemporary cast of the original sketch for the relief by Moitte for the Hôtel de Salm, Paris. This building was constructed between 1782 and 1787 as a royal palace, and "nationalized" after the French Revolution. In 1804 it became the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur. At this date new exterior sculptures were added and the interior remodeled.
Cybele was the ancient "great mother" goddess, whose festivals coincided with the beginning of spring.
