Commentaire

Antoinette Le Normand-Romain, A Private Passion: 19th-Century Paintings and Drawings from the Grenville L. Winthrop Collection, Harvard University, 2003, p. 287:
Rodin made Proust's acquaintance in December 1883. At the time, Rodin was preparing to have the estimate done for casting The Gates of Hell. To get into the good graces of high official of Direction des Beaux-Arts, he offered to make a bust of him. The sittings began in early 1884 and ended in July. The bust was cast in august by Pierre Bingen, who used the lost-wax method.
