Museum's label text, 2011:
Born in Paris, Fremiet studied sculpture with his uncle, François Rude. In the 1840's he became known chiefly for his fine animalier bronzes, but around 1872 he began to work in a larger scale. This terra-cotta clearly demonstrate how well Fremiet could conceive of complex multi-figure compositions without losing the energy and dynamism of the simpler animalier sculptures.
