Portrait of Alfred William Mond, the young son of wealthy London industrialist Emile Mond, nephew of Dr. Ludwig Mond, whose famous art collection was acquired by the National Gallery, London, in 1910.
While staying with the Mond family as a guest, Rosso studied the boy daily but became increasingly frustrated by his inability to capture Alfred's features in clay. Finally, during an evening reception, Rosso glimpsed the child staring at the proceedings from behind curtains, and inspired by this fleeting vision, the artist worked all night until he completed the portrait. He gave the family a wax version, which they did not consider a particularly good likeness, and later made an undetermined number of wax, plaster, and bronze casts from his model.
At least nine wax casts of this work have been identified, along with several in both plaster and bronze.
This one comes from the collection of the artist's granddaughter, Danila Rosso Parravicini, as did the wax cast in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.
The nose has been slightly indented and the wax has aged to a particularly deep yellow.
The inscription on the inside plaster surface was added by the granddaughter at the time she sold it to Lords Gallery, London.
